3 Things That’ll Effect the Price

The reason there’s no set price for a custom fireplace mantel is that every fireplace is a little different, which means the size, style, and installation of your mantel will be different.

Let’s start with the size of your custom fireplace mantel.

Fireplace Mantel Size

From my experience, there is a wide range of possible sizes when it comes to fireplaces and the mantels used to decorate them.

Keep in mind that the larger your fireplace mantel is requires more lumber material and labor to build, which will increase the cost of your custom mantel.

Wood Species

I’ve built a lot of different fireplace mantels and have used just about all of the different types of woods available.

From a pine mantel, which is one of the cheapest types of wood, to a high-end and expensive species of wood like walnut, the type of wood you choose will affect the price of your custom fireplace mantel.

Installation

Building your fireplace mantel is just half the story.

Installation, from my experience, can be just as big of a project as making the mantel itself.

installing a custom fireplace mantel

When removing an old mantel or covering up an out-of-style brick mantel, there are always unknowns that can affect the amount of work necessary to install.

Just know that installation will be another cost you’ll need to budget for when getting a custom fireplace mantel.

The Bottom Line Cost

While it’s impossible for me to give you a price for your custom mantel project, here are some ranges based on the variables I just mentioned above.

$550

Will get you a pine or red oak mantel of average size before installation.

$950

Will get you a white oak or walnut mantel of average size before installation.

$1,250

Will get you a white oak or walnut mantel of average size with installation.

Iā€™m quoting a red cedar mantle with a 3-3/4ā€ x 12ā€ x 6ā€™ live edge timber with floating/hidden hardware. Not sure how to price, looking for suggestions.

If it were me I’d figure out what my materials cost, then how many hours it will take to build and install, then how much you want to make (or need to make) per hour and price it as such. After you do a few of them and nail down your price, you can figure out a linear foot price if so desired. Hope that helps.
